Members of the Fz/Smo family of proteins serve as receptors in the Wnt signaling pathway and are involved in a variety of developmental processes. Frizzled-1 (Fzd-1) is a 75-80 kDa 7-transmembrane glycoprotein found on chondrocytes and in the presynaptic membranes of neurons. It is also reported to be found on fibroblasts, osteoblasts, enothelium and vascular smooth muscle, and in the embryo in mesoderm. Fzd-1 interacts with LRP-5 to generate a receptor complex for Wnts. Wnts known to bind Fzd-1 include Wnt-1, -2, -3, -3a, and -8. Over amino acids (aa) 1-248, human and mouse Fzd-1 share 87% aa sequence identity.
