Background: CNAP1

CAP-D2 is a subunit of the heteropentameric condensin I complex. Condensin participates in the condensation of chromosomes during cell division by facilitating positive DNA supercoiling and knotting by topoisomerase I and II and proper segregation of sister chromatids. In the condensin complex CAP-D2 may be important for targeting condensin to mitotic chromosomes as well as metaphase alignment of sister chromatids. Alternate designations for CAP-D2 include condensin complex subunit 1, non-SMC condensin complex subunit D2, chromosome condensation-related SMC-associated protein 1, chromosome-associated protein D2, hCAP-D2, XCAP-D2 homolog, NCAPD2, CAPD2, CNAP1, and KIAA0159.
