Background: Kirrel2/NEPH3

Kirrel2, also known as nephrin-like 3, nephrin-like gene 1 and filtrin, is a type I transmembrane protein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. By alternative splicing, at least 5 isoforms that differ in their extracellular and/or intracellular regions have been described. Kirrel2 is expressed in the pancreas, lymph nodes, kidney glomerulus, as well as brain. The extracellular domains of human and mouse Kirrel2 share 86% amino acid sequence identity.
