Background: ST8 alpha-2,8-Sialyltransferase 8A/ST8SIA1/Ganglioside GD3

Gangliosides are membrane bound glycosphingolipids that contain sialic acid. ST8SIA1 is a member of glycosyltransferase family 29 and is involved in cell adhesion and growth of cultured malignant cells. Thisa type II membrane protein catalyzes the transfer of sialic acid from CMP sialic acid to GM3 to produce gangliosides GD3 and GT3.
