C3 consists of two polypeptide chains (alpha, molecular weight 115 kDa and beta, molecular weight 75 kDa) and is usually present in serum at 1 to 2 mg/L. It is the pivotal protein of the complement system, being central in the classical pathway and the alternative pathway.
