Erythropoietin/EPO is a renal glycoprotein hormone that promotes erythrocyte formation by preventing the apoptosis of early erythroid precursors which express the EPO receptor (EPO R). Rapid regulation of circulating EPO allows tight control of erythrocyte production and hemoglobin concentrations.
