Aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) are NAD(P)⁺-dependent enzymes that detoxify aldehydes by oxidizing them to carboxylic acids. Nineteen ALDHs are present in humans, expressed in a variety of organelles and having different substrate preferences.
