Recombinant MERS-CoV 3CL Protease, CF Summary

Product Specifications

>85%, by SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions and visualized by Colloidal Coomassie® Blue stain.
Recombinant MERS-CoV virus 3CL Protease is a cysteine protease that cleaves proteins with sequences including a LQ[S/A/G].  The cleavage occurs c-terminal to the glutamine residue. We recommend an initial MERS-CoV 3CL Protease concentration of 50-100 nM when using substrate S-720.
E. coli-derived mers-cov 3CL Protease protein
Ser3248 - Gln3553
Contains the following substitutions: Val 3551 to Leu; Met 3552 to Phe
Accession #
Predicted Molecular Mass

Carrier Free

What does CF mean?

CF stands for Carrier Free (CF). We typically add Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) as a carrier protein to our recombinant proteins. Adding a carrier protein enhances protein stability, increases shelf-life, and allows the recombinant protein to be stored at a more dilute concentration. The carrier free version does not contain BSA.

What formulation is right for me?

In general, we advise purchasing the recombinant protein with BSA for use in cell or tissue culture, or as an ELISA standard. In contrast, the carrier free protein is recommended for applications, in which the presence of BSA could interfere.

Background: 3CL Protease

The 3CL protease (aka 3CLpro, Mpro or "Main" Protease) from the human MERS-CoV coronavirus (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus) is a C30-type cysteine protease located within the non-structural protein 3 (NS3) section of the viral polypeptide.  3CL protease activity is required to process the viral polyprotein into functional, mature subunits, and there are 11 or more sites of cleavage, many containing the sequence LQ[S/A/G]; the protease cleaves c-terminal to the glutamine amino acid.  This recombinant protein is untagged.
