Lissencephaly (LIS), literally meaning smooth brain, has multiple causes. Agyria, i.e., brain without convolutions or gyri, was considered a rare malformation until recent progress in neuroradiology. With this technical advantage, a number of lissencephaly syndromes have been distinguished.
