This ion channel is gated through the binding of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) to its ligand-binding site on the AChR. After binding acetylcholine, the AChR responds by an extensive change in conformation that affects all subunits and leads to opening of an ion-conducting channel across the plasma membrane. CHRNA6 (cholinergic nicotinic receptor alpha polypeptide 6) is a neuronal acetylcholine receptor protein.
