Background: Carbamazepine

Carbamazepine (5H-dibenzo[b,f]azepine carrying a carbamoyl substituent at the azepine nitrogen) is widely used as an anticonvulsant shown to inhibit histone deacetylase. It is also a mitogen, a glutamate transporter activator, an antimanic drug and a non-narcotic analgesic capable of blocking sodium channels. Carbamazepine is commonly used as an antiepileptic drug suitable for most epileptic seizure types and currently a first-line treatment for partial onset seizures in the USA and Europe. It is also used to relieve pain caused by trigeminal neuralgia.
