Background: DDB1

DNA Damage Binding protein 1 (DDB1) binds with CUL4 to form an ubiquitin E3 ligase that targets protein substrates for ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis (1, 2). Loss of DDB1 impedes the proteolysis of a grouping of CUL4 substrates at least in response to UV (3, 4) and CUL4 ubiquitinylation (5). DDB1 is highly conserved from yeast to mammals (3, 6). DDB1 specific antibody probes might be useful in identifying CUL4-DDB1 substrates in epigenetics applications and ubiquitin modification dependent protein function.
