Background: L1CAM

The cell adhesion molecule L1 (L1CAM) is an immunoglobulin superfamily adhesion molecule that is critical for neural development. Two alternatively spliced isoforms of L1CAM have been described. The full-length signaling isoform is expressed exclusively in neurons. The second non-neuronal variant lacks a five-residue extracellular sequence and a four residue cytoplasmic sequence that is important in signaling and clathrin-mediated endocytosis.
