Background: LRH-1/NR5A2

Lrh-1 (Liver Receptor Homolog 1), also called NR5A2, appears to play an important role in regulating pancreatic and embryonal stem cell differentiation maintaining a pluripotential or undifferentiated state. It also plays a role in controlling cholesterol balance (1, 2). Lrh-1 may control pluripotentiality through its regulation of Oct4 and Nanog, both are commonly held as requisite factors for maintenance of stem cell undifferentiated states (3). Additionally, Lrh-1 has a role in colon, pancreatic and breast cancer, accompanied by overexpression in the latter in ductal carcinomas (4, 5). Antibody to Lrh-1 provides a tool to link expression and function with undifferentiated states in embryonic stem cells or in cancers of the breast, intestine, and pancreas, and for further characterization of Lrh-1 as a potential biomarker.
