Background: MMP-2

Matrix metallopeptidase 2 (also known as MMP2, gelatinase A, 72 kDa gelatinase, and 72 kDa type IV collagenase) belongs to a family of mammalian extracellular neutral metalloproteinases that are able to degrade a number of matrix proteins. MMP-2 degrades type IV collagen, the structural component of basement membranes, in a specific manner, and it also has gelatinase activity. The protein also plays a role in endometrial menstrual breakdown, regulation of vascularization and the inflammatory response. The pathological role of the protein has been observed in multicentric osteolysis nodulosis and arthropathy and Winchester syndrome.
