T. gondii profilin-like protein is an 18 kDa protozoan molecule that activates TLR11. Activation of TLR11 induces IL-12 production in dendritic cells and promotes innate resistance to protozoan infection. While rodents have a functional TLR11 gene, the human counterpart is silent due to a mutation. Functionally, profilins are actin binding proteins that regulate the polymerization of actin during movement.
