Formulation, Preparation, and Storage
Carrier Free
What does CF mean?CF stands for Carrier Free (CF). We typically add Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) as a carrier protein to our recombinant proteins. Adding a carrier protein enhances protein stability, increases shelf-life, and allows the recombinant protein to be stored at a more dilute concentration. The carrier free version does not contain BSA.
What formulation is right for me?In general, we advise purchasing the recombinant protein with BSA for use in cell or tissue culture, or as an ELISA standard. In contrast, the carrier free protein is recommended for applications, in which the presence of BSA could interfere.

FAQs for Recombinant Human Oncostatin M (HEK-293-expressed) Protein
-
Q: Is Recombinant Human Oncostatin M (HEK-293-expressed) Protein (Catalog # 8475-OM) considered the pre-OSM peptide or mature protein?
A: Recombinant Human Oncostatin M (HEK-293-expressed) Protein (Catalog # 8475-OM) is comprised of amino acids Ala26-Arg221 of Accession # P13725. This region is the 196 residue mature form of OSM. -
Q: What are the differences between Recombinant Human Oncostatin M Protein (Catalog # 295-OM) and Recombinant Human Oncostatin M (HEK293-expressed) Protein (Catalog # 8475-OM)?
A: Recombinant Human Oncostatin M Protein (Catalog # 295-OM) and Recombinant Human Oncostatin M (HEK293-expressed) Protein (Catalog # 8475-OM) share the same protein sequence, Ala26-Arg221 of Accession # P13725, but Catalog # 295-OM was expressed in E. coli and Catalog # 8475-OM was expressed in HEK293 cells. They are offered in formulations with or without BSA as a carrier protein. Both proteins are routinely tested and have the same activity range in our established QC bioassay: "Measured in a cell proliferation assay using TF‑1 human erythroleukemic cells." The ED50 for this effect is 0.05-0.3 ng/mL. Catalog # 8475-OM is produced in a mammalian expression system so we would expect it to be glycosylated. Catalog # 295-OM is produced in E coli and is not glycosylated. If endotoxin levels are of concern for your application, we would recommend selecting the Catalog # 295-OM as it has an endotoxin threshold of <0.01 EU per 1 μg of protein. Catalog # 8475-OM has a higher endotoxin threshold of <0.10 EU per 1 μg of the protein. That said, if it is important to use a mammalian expressed protein like Catalog # 8475-OM in your assay system, and you require endortoxin lower than <0.10 EU/1 μg of the protein please consult technical service to see if custom testing is an option. We also recommend reviewing the references under the Citations tab on the respective product pages to check the types of applications in which these two proteins have been evaluated.
