Background: Serum Amyloid A1

Serum Amyloid A protein-1 (SAA1) is a multifunctional apolipoprotein that circulates as part of the HDL complex. It can displace ApoA1 as the major apolipoprotein in HDL complexes and reduce the capacity of HDL for reverse cholesterol transport. In response to proinflammatory cytokines, SAA1 is prominently produced in liver and also in human but not mouse adipose tissue. Circulating SAA1 levels can increase by as much as 1000-fold during inflammation. SAA1 induces monocyte and macrophage chemotaxis and activation through binding to CD36/SR-B3, SR-B1, FPRL1, TLR2, and RAGE. It can also opsonize and promote the clearance of Gram negative bacteria.
