Coatomer proteins are involved in regulating transport between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the Golgi complex and in intra-Golgi transport. There exist two coatomer-protein mechanisms (COP I and COP II) and although they have mechanistic parallels, they are molecularly distinct.
