Background: GCN2

GCN2 is a kinase that phosphorylates the alpha subunit of EIF2. GCN2 functions as a sensor of amino acid deficiency and modulates protein metabolism in response to cellular stress. GCN2 has also been reported to function in the regulation of lipid metabolism during amino acid deprivation. Alternate names for GCN2 include eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2-alpha kinase 4, GCN2-like protein, EIF2AK4, and KIAA1338.
