Product Specifications

Immunogen

Human erythrocytes

Specificity

NB100-66522 recognizes an epitope in the N-terminal region of CD236, also known as glycophorin C (GPC). CD236 is an integral membrane protein which carries the Gerbich blood group antigens. Expression of CD236 is not restricted to erythroid cells, but is broadly distributed in both erythroid and non-erythroid tissues.

Background: Glycophorin C

CD236 is a minor sialoglycoprotein in human erythrocyte membranes. The blood group Gerbich antigens and receptors for Plasmodium falciparum merozoites are most likely located within the extracellular domain. CD236 (Glycophorin C) plays an important role in regulating the stability of red cells. Expression of Glycophorin C is not restricted to erythroid cells but is broadly distributed in both erythroid and non erythroid tissues.
