Background: Quinidine

Quinidine, or (9S)−6′-methoxycinchonan-9-ol, is a d-isomer of quinine known as an anti-malarial drug. It is inactivated via kidney and hepatic metabolism through cytochrome P450. Quinidine interacts with various ion channels including NaV1.5, Kv4.3 and Kv1.4It was found to have strong antiarrhythmic properties and was widely used as a prescription drug. Its popularity as  antiarrhythmic drug was declining due causing an increase in mortality of patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy. Although Quinidine has severe side effects including diarrhea, bloating photophobia, dizziness, tinnitus and headaches, it remains an important antiarrhythmic drug.
