The Integrin alpha 4 subunit, also known as CD49d and VLA-4 alpha subunit, forms heterodimers with Integrin beta 1 (CD29) or beta 7. Integrins alpha 4 beta 1 (VLA4) and alpha 4 beta 7 are both receptors for fibronectin and VCAM. Integrin alpha 4 beta 7 also binds the mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule (MAdCAM-1). On the cell surface, VLA4 will participate in homotypic binding between endothelial cells and leukocytes. The extracellular domains of human and mouse Integrin alpha 4 share 85% aa sequence identity.
