Background: Thymopoietin
Thymopoietin (TP alpha; also TMPO, LAP2 alpha and TPRP alpha ) is a 75 kDa member of the LEM family of molecules. It is a nucleoplasmic protein that is widely expressed in cells such as keratinocytes and thymocytes. Here, it interacts with A-type lamins and Rb/retinoblastoma protein, thus participating in cell cycle exit. Human thymopoietin is 694 amino acids (aa) in length. It contains a potential N-terminal “thymopoietin peptide” segment (aa #2-49), a BAF-binding LEM domain (aa #109-153), an NLS (aa #190-196), and a coiled-coil region (aa #558-657). Multiple splice variants exist. All contain the same 188 N-terminal amino acids. Five variants show singular 49, 157, 266, 226, and 60 aa substitutions for the C-terminal 506 amino acids. Over aa #2-187, human thymopoietin shares 93% aa identity with mouse thymopoietin.
