Background: ZSCAN21
ZSCAN21 (Zinc finger and SCAN domain-containing protein 21; also Zfp-38, NY-REN-21, Zipro1 and Ru49) is a nuclear member of the multi-finger SCAN box protein family. It is expressed in select cell types, including cerebellar granule cells, Schwann cells, cerebral cortical and sympathetic neurons, round spermatids, and cells of the hair follicles plus sebaceous glands. It may have multiple functions, one of which is to initiate transcription of neuronal alpha -synuclein, while a second may be to promote granule cell proliferation. Human ZSCAN21 is 473 amino acids (aa) in length. It contains one SCAN (SREZBP, Ctfin51, AW-1/ ZNF174, and Number 18) domain (aa 45-127) that mediates dimerization, followed by seven consecutive C2H2-type zinc-finger regions (aa 277-466). ZSCAN21 is known to form both noncovalent homodimers and heterodimers with SCAND1. There is one potential isoform variant that shows a 188 aa substitution for aa 263-473. Over aa 139-223, human ZSCAN21 shares 54% aa sequence identity with mouse ZSCAN21.
