Background: LRH-1/NR5A2

NR5A2 is a member of the so-called NR5A family of nuclear receptors. NR5A2, also call LRH1 or Liver Receptor Homolog 1, appears to play an important role in regulating pancreatic and embryonal stem cell differentiation maintaining a pluripotential or undifferentiated state. It also plays a role in controlling cholesterol balance (1, 2). NR5A2 may control pluripotentiality through its regulation of Oct4 and Nanog, both are commonly held as requisite factors for maintenance of stem cell undifferentiated states (3). Additionally, NR5A2 has a role in colon, pancreatic and breast cancer, accompanied by overexpression in the latter in ductal carcinomas (4, 5). Antibody to NR5A2 provides a tool to link expression and function with undifferentiated states in embryonic stem cells or in cancers of the breast, intestine, and pancreas, and for further characterization of NR5A2 as a potential biomarker.
