Background: NOP58

NOP58 (nucleolar protein 58) is a member of the conserved nop5 (Drosophila)/sik1/Nop56p (yeast) gene family that encodes components of snoRNP/small nucleolar ribonucleoproteins, which contains a snoRNA and a complex of proteins. NOP58 belongs to box C/D snoRNP, which is named for short, conserved box C (UGAUGA) and box D (CUGA) sequences present in their RNA moiety. snoRNP primarily catalyzes the cleavage as well as modification of rRNA during the biogenesis of ribosomes, nucleolar sizing, and snoRNA trafficking. In yeast, at least two members, Nop56 and Nop58, are present, and yeast cells deficient in either of the two members undergoes growth arrest because of defective protein translation. Furthermore, functional mutations of Nop56p/sik1 have been shown to cause reduced cell growth and proliferation. In mammalian cells, NOP58 has been found to increase rRNA synthesis and translational efficiency of the exogenous luciferase (Luc) gene, and its expression correlate with metastatic phenotypes of clinical melanomas.
