INTENDED USE AND DESCRIPTION: For use a quantitative control for the determination of human IFN-beta concentrations in biological fluids. Controls are supplied lyophilized. The product is shipped with polar packs. Upon receipt, store it immediately at the temperature recommended below.

Storage

• Store lyophilized controls at 2-8 °C. Lyophilized controls are stable for up to 12 months from date of receipt.
• Reconstituted controls are stable for up to 6 months from date of preparation when stored at ≤ -70 °C. Storage at -20° C is not recommended.
• Individual frozen aliquots of low and high controls are designed as single-use entities. Thaw directly before use and discard any remaining volume.

Background: IFN-beta

IFN-beta (Interferon-beta) is a cytokine that is produced by fibroblasts and pathogen-exposed dendritic cells, macrophages, and endothelial cells. It signals through the heterodimeric IFN-alpha/beta Receptor. IFN-beta-deficient mice show increased susceptibility to experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a disease model of human multiple sclerosis (MS). Furthermore, IFN-beta has been shown to suppress the Th17 cell response in both MS and EAE and has commonly been used as a treatment for MS.
