Background: Alpha Fodrin

SPTAN1/Alpha II-spectrin is one of two polypeptide chains (alpha and beta) that are part of the fodrin tetramer. Fodrin functions to link actin filaments to the plasma membrane and is a major neuronal cytoskeletal protein. Fodrin has been linked to neurogenerative and autoimmune diseases. Alternate names for SPTAN1/Alpha II-spectrin include alpha-fodrin, spectrin alpha chain brain, spectrin non-erythroid alpha chain, fodrin alpha chain, SPTA2, and FLJ44613.
