Pluripotent stem cell characterization can be a time-consuming process as it is best done via functional analysis of differentiation potential. In addition to lineage analysis, a number of stem cell markers can be used to assess pluripotency. The analysis of established embryonic stem (ES) and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell markers, such as Oct-4 and Nanog, via immunocytochemistry and/or flow cytometry is a time-saving and cost-effective approach to verify stem cell pluripotency.
