Background: Importin-7

Importin-7 (IOP7) belongs to the Importin beta family and contains an importin N-terminal domain. It functions in nuclear protein import in association with importin-beta subunit kPNB1. It mediates autonomously the nuclear import of ribosomal proteins RPL23A, RPS7 and RPL5 and the nuclear import of H2A, H2B, H3 and H4 histones in vitro. Studies suggest it acts as a nuclear import receptor for the Glucocorticoid receptors. It also acts as a receptor for nuclear localization signals (NLS) and to promote translocation of import substrates through the nuclear pore complex (NPC) by an energy requiring, Ran-dependent mechanism. Reports indicate that in HIV-1 infection, IOP7 binds and mediates the nuclear import of HIV-1 Rev.
