CD48 is a GPI-linked protein in the CD2 subfamily of immunoglobulin superfamily proteins. Human and mouse CD48 share 51% amino acid sequence identity. CD48 binds with high affinity to the natural killer (NK) cell activating ligand 2B4 and with lower affinity to CD2. A soluble form of CD48 has been detected in the serum of lymphoid leukemia and arthritis patients.
