Background: BLIMP1/PRDM1

Blimp-1 (B lymphocyte maturation protein-1) is a transcriptional repressor that is required to trigger terminal differentiation of B lymphocytes into Ig secreting cells. Therefore, Blimp 1 is generally considered a "master regulator" for hematopoietic stem cells.

Blimp1 is a nuclear protein with five zinc fingers in its carboxy terminus. The Blimp-1 protein is expressed in, and may be required for terminally differentiated epithelial cells, retinal neurons and other lineage cells. BLIMP-1 has also been implicated in the repression of beta-interferon (IFN-beta) and c-myc gene expression.
