Neurons - General Markers
In neural cell cultures and nervous tissue, neurons are identified by immunodetection of specific proteins localized to the surface of neurons and/or within the cell. The interactive graphic below lists some of the most commonly used neuronal markers including NeuN, Neuron-Specific Enolase (NSE), also called Enolase 2, Microtubule-Associated Protein 2 (MAP2), Neuron-Specific beta-III Tubulin, and PSD-95. Clicking on a molecule will take you to the R&D Systems product selection for researching that molecule. Clicking on a molecule that is designated by (novusbio.com) will take you to the Novus Biologicals’ website and their antibody offerings for that protein.
Data Examples
NeuN in Mouse Brain. NeuN, also called RBFOX3, was detected in immersion-fixed paraffin-embedded sections of mouse brain (hippocampus) using a Rabbit Anti-Human/Mouse/Rat RBFOX3/NeuN Antigen Affinity-Purified Polyclonal Antibody (Novus Biologicals, Catalog # NBP1-77686). The hippocampal tissue was stained using HRP and DAB (brown), and counterstained with hematoxylin (blue).
beta-III Tubulin in Rat Cortical Neurons. beta-III Tubulin was detected in rat cortical neurons using a Mouse Anti-Neuron-Specific beta-III Tubulin Monoclonal Antibody (Clone # TuJ-1; R&D Systems, Catalog # MAB1195). The cells were stained using the NorthernLights™ 557-Conjugated Donkey Anti-Mouse IgG Secondary Antibody (R&D Systems, Catalog # NL007; red). Rat astrocytes were also detected using a Sheep Anti-Human GFAP Antigen Affinity-Purified Polyclonal Antibody
(R&D Systems, Catalog # AF2594), followed by a NorthernLights™ 493-Conjugated Donkey Anti-Sheep IgG Secondary Antibody (R&D Systems, Catalog # NL012; green).
NF-H in Human Brain. Neurofilament (NF)-H was detected in immersion-fixed paraffin-embedded sections of human brain (cerebellum) using a Goat Anti-Human NF-H Antigen Affinity-Purified Polyclonal Antibody (R&D Systems, Catalog # AF3108). The tissue was stained using the Anti-Goat HRP-DAB Cell & Tissue Staining Kit (R&D Systems, Catalog # CTS008; brown) and counterstained with hematoxylin (blue)
