TMEM18 is an obesity risk gene. It is a small protein of 140 residues and is predicted to be mostly alpha-helical with three transmembrane parts. TMEM18 forms homooligomers, independently of the DNA-binding domain. TMEM18 localizes to the nuclear membrane and binds to DNA in a sequence-specific manner. TMEM18 is a transcription repressor sequence-specific ssDNA and dsDNA binding protein with preference for GCT end CTG repeats. TMEM18 is a cell migration modulator which enhances the glioma-specific migration ability of neural stem cells (NSC) and neural precursor cells (NPC).
