Organelles: Intercellular Junctions
Overview
Cell-cell contacts are mediated by adherens junctions and tight junctions (belts of physical attachment between endothelial or epithelial cells), desmosomes (focal attachments to protect against mechanical stress), gap junctions (allow the passage of small molecules and ions between cells). Contact is maintained by interaction between adhesion proteins on each cell, and the adhesion proteins are coupled to the cytoskeleton.
Data Examples
E-Cadherin in Human Epidermoid Carcinoma Cells. E-Cadherin was detected in immersion fixed human epidermoid carcinoma cells using 10 µg/mL Goat Anti-Human/Mouse E-Cadherin Antigen Affinity-purified Polyclonal Antibody (Catalog # AF648) for 3 hours at room temperature. Cells were stained with the NorthernLights™ 557-conjugated Anti-Goat IgG Secondary Antibody (red; Catalog # NL001) and counterstained with DAPI (blue). P-Cadherin in A431 Human Cell Line. P‑Cadherin was detected in immersion fixed A431 human epithelial carcinoma cell line using Mouse Anti-Human P-Cadherin Monoclonal Antibody (Catalog # MAB861) at 10 µg/mL for 3 hours at room temperature. Cells were stained using the NorthernLights™ 557-conjugated Anti-Mouse IgG Secondary Antibody (red; Catalog # NL007) and counterstained with DAPI(blue). Specific staining was localized to the cell surface. View our protocol for Fluorescent ICC Staining of Cells on Coverslips.
VE-Cadherin in HUVEC Cells. VE-Cadherin was detected in immersion fixed HUVEC human umbilical vein endothelial cells using Goat Anti-Human VE-Cadherin Antigen Affinity-purified Polyclonal Antibody (Catalog # AF938) at 10 µg/mL for 3 hours at room temperature. Cells were stained using the NorthernLights™ 557-conjugated Anti-Goat IgG Secondary Antibody (red; Catalog # NL001) and counterstained with DAPI (blue). Specific staining was localized to the plasma membrane. View our protocol for Fluorescent ICC Staining of Cells on Coverslips.
