Carboxypeptidase E (CPE) is a peripheral membrane protein that cleaves C-terminal amino acid residues and is involved in the processing of numerous peptide hormones and neurotransmitters. CPE knockout mice live but become obese due to impaired glucose clearance and insulin resistance. The CPE precursor includes a signal peptide (aa 1‑25), a propeptide (aa 26‑42) and a mature chain (aa 43‑476). The amino acid sequence of human CPE is 99.8%, 96.6%, 96.3%, and 90.2% identical to that of chimpanzee, mouse, dog and chicken.
