Calcitonin in Human Dorsal Root Ganglion. Calcitonin was detected in immersion fixed paraffin-embedded sections of human dorsal root ganglion using Rabbit Anti-Human Calcitonin Monoclonal Antibody (Catalog # MAB83503) at 3 µg/mL for 1 hour at room temperature followed by incubation with the Anti-Rabbit IgG VisUCyte™ HRP Polymer Antibody (Catalog # VC003). Before incubation with the primary antibody, tissue was subjected to heat-induced epitope retrieval using Antigen Retrieval Reagent-Basic (Catalog # CTS013). Tissue was stained using DAB (brown) and counterstained with hematoxylin (blue). Specific staining was localized to cytoplasm. Background: Calcitonin

Human Calcitonin (CALCA, Calcitonin) is a 32 aminoacids (aa) protein formed by the proteolytic cleavage of a larger prepropeptide, which is the product of the CALC1 gene. Precursor protein (a 141 aa in length member of the calcitonin family) is cleaved into a propeptide and the following 2 chains: Calcitonin (aa 85-116) and Katacalcin (aa 121-141). Antigen used to develop this antibody corresponds to the mature Calcitonin cleaved peptide. Secreted Calcitonin is known to cause a rapid but short-lived drop in the level of calcium and phosphate in blood by promoting the incorporation of those ions in the bones.
