What are Hematopoietic Stem Cells?

Hematopoietic stem cells are self-renewing cells that give rise to cells of the hematopoietic system including those of the myeloid lineage (monocytes, macrophages, basophils, neutrophils, eosinophils, erythrocytes, megakaryocytes, platelets, and dendritic cells) and the lymphoid lineage (T cells, B cells, and NK cells). Hematopoietic stem cells can be isolated from bone marrow, cord blood, and peripheral blood. However, the cells are rare and are similar to leukocytes in morphology. Therefore, hematopoietic stem cells are typically identified by functional assays and marker expression. R&D Systems offers a range of products for hematopoietic stem cell research including premium quality antibodies, expansion media, proteins, and Methylcellulose media for performing colony forming cell (CFC) assays.
